Friends, I have a Christmas wish:
Help me help my charity! Unlimited Potential (UP), my favorite grassroots adult education program for the working poor, needs your support more than ever. Reduced grants and community funds have made it a challenge to cover the usual services.
This is too bad, especially for the children’s programs. I have known these teachers, all of them fine educators—Maria (preschool), Graciela (toddlers), and Irene (infants)—for almost ten years. They are the most caring helpers on the road of child development. And since they are also graduates of the 2-year women’s program and come from the same immigrant background as the mothers in class, they know instinctively where interventions are needed.
I wouldn’t ask you for your contribution, if I didn’t know that UP’s programs are right on target. Most participants (majority of women) come from a very low level of income and education. UP helps them improve their English, teaches them parenting and life skills, educates them about prevention (alcohol, abuse), and encourages families to be active participants of the community.
As with many charities, there are not enough spots in the program to serve everybody. The waiting list (100+) is long. Many moms apply hoping to attend these classes while their small children get schooled next door. Participants know that if they finish the two-year course, they are much more likely to get a job, especially if they also achieve a GED in the summer term.
UP directly serves 100 persons, but through its “ripple effect” it touches more than 1000 lives each year. Graduates from the programs have moved on to the community college level and successfully acquired employment.
Education is the best prevention. Only parents who have this awareness can role-model the right ambitions for their children. It takes a whole village to raise a child, but if you educate the family half the battle is won.
I could invite you to a very fine fundraising luncheon called “Educating Families for Tomorrow” on November 17, but knowing that you might be too far away to join us for this celebration, I will let you off easy.
Just donate to the “GoFundMe” link in the margin. It only takes a couple of clicks. Should you feel so generous to contribute $25+ and $50+, I will send you a piece of very fine miniature art as posted above. Images will vary.
ANY AMOUNT IS APPRECIATED! THANK YOU! DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE
It is my dream to raise $3000 for the children’s programs by Christmas. So dream with me for the good outcome.
